124" Oil Temps?

I installed the engine last fall so this is the first time to ride it with the warmer weather. Temps today were mid 90's. I'm running a Jagg's 10 row cooler and Torco 50W oil. The gauge is a Dakota Digital. Temps were 245-250 while cruising down the highway in 6th gear (65mph/2300 rpms). She stays around 240 degrees when cruising the backroads at 45 mph.

The bike runs okay but I might let one of Doc's recommended tuners take a look at it. I get a occasional ping at low rpm roll on between 2000-2200 rpms. Mileage isn't as good as some others (38 mpg). I'm not concerned about high #'s, just a solid tune that will run great.

Are my oil temps normal?

After reading some of these threads, concerning this issue, those temps seem to be on the high side of normal.I would suggest having your tune checked to address the pinging,& while they are at it check your mapping!!! JMHOP

IMHO those temps seem normal for being in the mid 90s. On my own bike which has a baby motor compared to yours it will run the same temps in the heat. When it cools down I will run about 210-220. I would check the tune to be safe though in any case.

Yeah that don't sound too good!!!!@gree:

I'm willing to give up some numbers in order to have the reliability. At WOT it's a monster. I'll talk to Doc as he had a former co-worker that now tunes in PA that he recommended to me before. I didn't build it for mileage but thought it would of been in the 40's as some other similar builds are.

Good point. I try to keep the rpms higher but occasionally find myself there especially on the highway.

#11 ·
Stay out of 6th gear until your constantly over 2800rpms....you'll see the motor cool and the fuel mileage go up

#13 ·
****, that would put me at around 80 mph before using 6th gear.

i'd bet the oil temp would have to hit 400 450 before that oil gets in trouble. 250 is no problem for a good synthetic. some changes in tune may bring it down, but my 107 runs that hot regularly.

My 124" would cruise real nice at 2700-2800 in 6th which was around 75mph. If I needed to slow I'd drop to 2200 and downshift to 5th which was around 60-65 at 2700-2800. Gotta use those gears to avoid lugging it. I never rode under 2200 and that was usually when I was slowing that I would ever get that low. Normally I'd only roll on from 2500 and even then only half throttle until I got the revs up. My temps were running pretty high as well and our builds were very similar. Your tune should reveal your AFR and that will hopefully fix it for you. What tuner are you running now and what cams did you run again?

i like using 5 and 6th when cruising, with just a small amount of throttle i can go from the speed limit to a healthy speeding ticket just breathing on the throttle. 5th and 6th gear roll ons at 2000rpm (especially in the heat) i don't do, even in lower gears with less load i still like to spool it up a bit more before wot.

Dave, you still running the sidecar all the time? If so, might want to make sure the tunes still good, but going down to a 27 tooth sprocket might help the spooling of the DD6. How many CCP is your build?

I'm running the SE Super Tuner. I guess I should have made a few runs with the D&D Fat Cat since I had it too at the time.

TXCHOP, your correct about me running the sidecar. Ya know I did have two passengers today so that could of increase the temps a bit. I still want to get the tune checked to make sure it's safe and setup the best.

No lower fairings. The mounting of the sidecar interfered so I removed them. Plenty of airflow when moving.

Here are some pics of the setup.

Mine runs about 240-250 when in the mid 90s. Nothing wrong with that. Then again, I don't use an oil cooler. Then again...again, mine isn't totin' a side car!

This 124" never, ever pings but it's very well tuned (carb), and is only 10.8:1.

I cruise between 1900-2300 most of the time on the back roads and don't mind easing down to 1600 on occasion. Just steady state easin' along at those RPMs. Might hit half throttle or a little better at 2500 and full throttle around 3000 or so.

didnt know about the sidecar. the hack that me and wifey had would work iitself hard and get hot too. mpg dropped into the low 30 range when really pulling on the motor-----i rode it normal also:hystria:

as paul harvey said: there is the rest of the story! call bobby woods, he has a dual jag setup with thermostat.

Well today the temps outside were the same, I rode the bike for 60 miles keeping the rpms at 2800 in 6th. No passengers and the temps climbed to 261. Yeah I figured the sidecar would work the engine more. Just wanted to know if these temps are in the ballpark.

Since adding the sidecar I see 30 mpg. She does fly though. :D I think I still have someone check the tune for peace of mind.

I can fly the car easy when empty, haven't done it yet with the OL in it. It took awhile to get used to but I really enjoy it. Only added it for the three of us to ride at the same time. I just raked the trees 5 degrees so that made the steering easier.

What I meant earlier about flying is the 124" lets the bike accelerate pretty damn fast for having a hack on it.

I keep mine around 3000 RPM and if I hit the throttle it pings till I get to around 3200RPM. But if I roll on the throttle It does not ping. Still tinkering with the maping. I'm hoping to get it tuned soon. route66paul has a guy that is supposed to be good at tuning. I'm hoping he can make time for me. But man I love this motor.
