Remove the cover and gasket. Toss the old gasket in the garbage. Clean both the primary derby cover and the primary gasket area itself with brake cleaner. Spray the brake cleaner on a rag to wipe the primary down...dont spray it inside.
Install the cover with a new gasket and tighten it down...and walaah...oil leak fixed.
QUOTE=tussuck;2164700]Careful...often a leak in the main drain plug will also look like its comeing from the bottom of the derby cover as its basically below it.
Wipe everything down with brake cleaner and then check in the morning to see where the leak is coming from.[/QUOTE]

I had the same thing. Turned out tranny fluid was dripping down the backside of the primary and collecting at the bottom of the derby cover. Got a lot of help from this forum. It was a blown shift shaft seal.
Yeah...It all seem to collect in the same spot regardless of where it starts.
I usally wipe everything clean - even under the primary and cases (sometimes with engine degreaser) and then place a mirror on the floor under the bike just where the drip comes down. Then the following morning its a piece of cake to see where the drip originated from.
If it turns put to be the derby cover that is leaking after following Tussuck's advice, get yourself a straight edge and make sure it isn't warped. Since there are only three screws holding it in place, it's critical that it is flat and true.
just try a new gasket. they're cheep. i don't know if a 5 hole would fit yours or not. if you start changing parts you're going to start spending some serious $$$$$.
mine was warped and the po had used gasket maker to seal it up.
i got an aftermarket derby cover, the o ring gasket and a little tread sealer on the bolts.
fixed that leak.......
Slightly warped derby cover (un-chromed).....on a piece of tempered glass laying on a table, place a large piece of wet and dry sandpaper...grit side up.
Wet it, and place your derby cover...gasket side down, and gently rub the high spots off......
A mechanic told me early on to put a little grease on the threads of the drain plug before installing and don't over tighten, it's never leaked and comes off easily.
