Tuning cost

I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I've been getting price estimates on tuning that run anywhere from $300 to over $1000. $1000+ tuners give me a rough idea of what they do for this, but none have been specific. I'm being told by the higher priced one's that anyone doing anything for less isn't doing a full tune, but only WOT.

I gave up on doing it myself using the low cost dyno time I came upon a while back. The guy turned into an ass about half-way through the process because he said I was taking too long to do it myself (too long included waiting on them for things I needed also). Didn't matter that he told me he knew how to do it before the whole thing started and turned out he had no clue.

Pro tune by one of the best that included a good base map to start with for my build, then a complete recalibration for all operating regimes with the numbers in my signature below for $385 and that was for 2 separate sessions. The total number of partial and full pulls was about 38, if I recall correctly.

$1000 is ludicrous!

300-400 sounds about right, I have had several of em, not a single one worth a shitt! I am in mine anout $1400 and it ain't even close yet........
So, $1000 sounds ludicrous at that rate, I'd be in my tune up $4,000! Maybe it would closer...., Naw, I doubt it!

Dude, yer on the east coast, for $1000, take a road trip and see doc in fl, he'll get you tuned up and you'll have the rest of the cahs for expenses. What about Dr Dyno at the Myrtle Beach rally?

dyno tuning cost

You have to realize that this shop does not really want your business. Also, it can depend on what kind of set-up you have. I reccommend that you walk away and find someone else. You might consider asking around to find out who is the best in your area. You might keep this in mind, your approach might help or hinder the cost. Don't forget, the business doesn't have to provide you with a service if they don't want to. Maybe for some reason, the guy took a look at your bike and determined that he didn't want to work on it for some reason, so he quoted you an extrodinary high cost.

A complete dyno tune cost can and should really be priced on what the dyno operator actually has to do. For example, if your bike is already running ok but needs some minor tweaks then the cost should be far less then if your engine needs to have SERT loaded, then a base map loaded, custom tuned and 25 passes on the dyno made. So to ask how much it should cost is really dependent of what and how much work has to be performed on your bike.

I'm considering Rosa's down in Long Island and also Joe's in Troy, NY. Andrew at Rosa's won't be able to get to it until maybe sometime in October since it would have to be a 'while you wait' type thing. Andrew recommended Joe's if it was closer (which it is) and since Joe's may be able to do it same day. I consider between $300 and $500 to be reasonable.

One place up this way charges per hp or ft lb gained. That pricing model is kinda like going to Vegas in my opinion.

I did talk to Dr. Dyno, but don't have the time to visit an event where he's appearing. Trying not to spend a grand, so even a trip far far away isn't an option.

Tuning for a custom map out here runs 350-550. Dealers out here just drop in canned and still charge 350.00 for 5-pulls. I have spent hundreds of dollars on tunes that were 1/2 to 3/4 right, but not 100% dialed in. 100/hr is going rate if the guy is a guru on EFI. I finally found a great one locally!

With all due respect, if you spend $1000 on a tune you're an idiot!

Love that line of crap that because they are overcharging that every one else doesn't know what they are doing because their price is less. You should ask him this......
"I found a guy that charges $2000 for a tune. Does that mean that your work sucks because you are only charging a grand???"

PS - Both Rosa's and Joe's will get you there!!

Hey CS,

Not to hijack the thread but is ole Skin Donnie still down there at Cajun? Use to race with him back in the day with the ADBA. Good cat and had a pretty quick FXDX.

Brian
Can't say Brian. I have only dealt with Rick when he tuned my bike. They do run a few race bikes though.

Trust me, I am not about to spend a grand on a tune. Talked to Andrew at Rosa's the other day and he said he could do it, but it's a little busy right now. He recommended Joe's if I want it done sooner than next month.

Called Joe's and had a decent conversation. Didn't treat me like I was a moron and was sincerely interested in what I did when I was playing with it myself. At no point, even though he may have thought I shouldn't have done something, did he give me some egotistical smartass crap like I've been getting from most of the 'tuners' I've talked to. It was a nice casual conversation. Never interrupted me or acted like he didn't care what I had to say. Said he would guarantee the tune as long as nobody messed with the map after the fact, so I'm there as soon as I can arrange getting the bike dropped off.

He likes the PC because he can tune faster with it. I have a PCIII for it, but never installed it and he said he would install it no charge. But, he also said bring my SERT with me because he would do a quick tune with it to get it to the point that it would run pretty good without the PC in case the PC would crap out somewhere.

Would like to add that a 'top' tuner mentioned on this forum I spoke with wanted upwards of a grand and said since I've already 'installed' the SERT I would not be able to use a PC on the bike. Said the SERT 'install' will lock out anything else.

Still trying to understand this notion of the term 'install' as it relates to the SERT. I know you can't read what's in there if you lose whatever map you've uploaded, but unless I have my head up my ass, the ECM is a relatively dumb device when it comes to what might be hanging on it. Evidence of this is the fact I can put anything I want at the end of any sensor connection and make the ECM think whatever I want, which is essentially how anything added operates.

This all assumes that electronic theory hasn't changed in recent years and that to date no one is building an ECM that 'senses' something other than itself is running the show.

Wow!! SERT locks out everything else, huh?? Thats a good one from a TOP TUNER no less. But don't let Harley read this, that will probably be the next upgrade on the dongle from the MOCO. SERT ONLY, no other tuning modules allowed.

Come on now Bounty, give us a hint. %potstir@
