FXD add ons

So what did you do to the bike (if you don't mind my asking). I just picked up a 2001 FXDX in mint condition. Previous owner took incredible care of it. I love the bike and am wondering where to start in terms of customizations. Already looking into a touring seat for my wife who doesn't like the stock option, but can't tell from the postings whether the Mustang is worth it. Any suggestions on where to go with this puppy? Also, any good suggestions on suppliers? I've found Dennis Kirk HD and it looks pretty good!

I bought my FXD used and much of what was done was already on it. You can do most of the same things to a lowrider as they are similar. First off, mine has the chrome outer primary, derby and timing covers, tappet block covers, transmission/engine transition cover, regulator cover. This really set off the polished engine. On the FXDX you have the black like the lowrider, the chrome will really set it off in a nice way if that is your taste. My FXD has the HD Concho Bags (hard mounted), they look good, but I would say shop around and look at what is available aftermarket, you might like the Boss bags, or Saddleman better. As for the seat, I have seen the Mustang tourer, and also the Mustang solo with the wide pillion. Both look like probabley the most comfortable you are gonna buy for the wife and yourself without sacrificing appearance. I have the optional HD tourer with the wider rear section. It rides ok, but I want to upgrade to the studded and skirted mustang with the wide pad, both for me and my wife. I added a HD compact detachable windshield I bought on e-bay like new for 2 bills. It helps a lot without sacrificing looks, but if you are into really serioud touring I would buy the wider touring windshield in a detachable. Most of my hi-way runs are in the 100 to 300 mile range so I chose the smaller shield. You have bought a scoot with lots of potential any way you choose to go. You can add the screaming eagle stage I and really wake that bad boy up without spending a king's ransom to do it. My FXD had the SE breather kit, exhausts, 6200 coil pack, and a 42MM flatside Mikuni on it and it is plenty hot for my liking, and dependable. Lot's of luck with the new scoot and keep the rubber side down!

Whistle, Are you adjusting your rear shock preload when you ride two up. My wife and I are withing 10lbs of you and yours, and I never have a problem bottoming.

GlennM, how did you shatter an oil pan, did you also rip off the protective piece on the bottom of the frame that protects the pan? I would think a bump big enough to rip off that wing to get to the pan would also dump the bike.

I've started moving toward the bike in the picture above.

Dropped a 2:1 supertrapp on it and a SE air cleaner so far. Brakes are next with floating rotors and racing pads.

I'll probably do that aluminum swingarm and wheels this fall.

I've been tracking a front end wobble, but I tightened up the steering head a little while I changed the fluids this weekend and so far it feels a lot better.

I'm found a sportbike windshield I'm going to fabricate a fork mount for as well, probably next week, I'll put a pic up if it comes out looking ok and functioning.

AustinFXDWG-No I haven't adjusted it at all. I have left it however it was adjusted from the factory. It feels pretty good, and like I said, it only bottoms out when I go over a BIG bump 2 up. It's really VERY rare that it happens.

If I was to keep my bike I would probably put on some progressive suspension front & rear. But I'm planning on selling my car, moving out west, selling the wide glide, and getting a bagger................ I know I'll get no end of sh!t from my buds for buying a bagger at the ripe old age of 24, but geeeeeeezzzzz they look comfy!!! :D

later,
Nick

Thanks

Great advice! Much appreciated. I've already got the smaller windshield, leather bags, backrest and pad, but no chrome. Also have the SE exhaust. I'll most most likely work in the intake and chrome next. Thanks again. Great bike!

Likely an age old question, but just curious. I'll rent both before I buy, but why did you go with a Dyna?

I like the Low Rider in the Dyna and the FatBoy in the Softail.
The LowRider is nice but I went with the Superglide because it's a blank canvase. Also, the handling - this thing can rip up the corners like no other HD. I considered lowering but didn't because there are times I still want to push the envelope on the corners - the Superglide delivers.

FX's Superglide, my third in 23 years due to the being the best value in the HD line...lowest cost and lightest of the Big Twins.

I like the "sleeper" look of my '04 FXDi, not flashy (been asked twice in the last week if my bike is the new "04 Sporty...yep, you should see their eyes when I start her up!).

Leaves plenty of $$$ on the table for mods, this third time around, I did a HTCC build, added some wheels, a splash of chrome, new seat and really have a bike that is tailored to my riding habits and desires.

Comfortable with the midcontrols or I can stretch on my highway pegs.

The FX's are the "vanilia ice cream" of the Big Twin lineup...I guess I'm just a vanilia type guy.....just like to add nuts, hot fudge , whipcream and a cherry and have it my way!

Whistle, you speak larger than 20 something my friend, and I would never give you a hard time for going bigger. I myself, want to do the same thing within a year...Im 41 going on 20 something..

I love my glide though :)

I got to ride my manager's 02 Fat Boy, Liked it, but it didn't handle like I wanted. Then rode the company owner's 02 Heritage, just not my style. Went to Daytona HD and looked at a used 01 Wide Glide. I was about ready to buy it when I decided to ride the New 03 FXDX. Fell in love with everything about it except the mid controls. Felt way to cramped for my 6'2" frame. Bought it put the forward controls on and whipped my manager’s Fatty with a Carl's Speed Shop modified engine with my Stock FXDX so bad he was pissed about the $20k he put into his. Can't wait till I can save up enough $ to do Heads, Cams, and the 98" kit on my bike.
